The History
The band released its first EP as Code Canary in 2014, titled 'Wolves'. It was produced by former The Sisters of Mercy guitarrist and Hamburg producer, Andreas Bruhn, who was impressed by the band's live performance and musicianship during the 2013 John Lennon Talent Award. The band, still going by its former name 'Starpost', went on to win the coveted award -until recently the only award with Yoko Ono's official approval- and embarked on a European tour shortly after to promote 'Wolves'. The band's live performances have gained them praise not only from Bruhn, who described the sound as "unexpected... yet extremely satisfying", but also from Guano Apes frontgirl, Sandra Nasic, and Wir Sind Helden's synth-genius, Jean-Michel Tourette who praised the band's on-stage presence and aesthetics.
The Sound
The band's sound features a blend of dark pop tunes with a solid rhythm core accentuated by Alex Schalja's sub-bass synth notes and David Meister's electro beats and machine-like drums. This foundation is completed by singer David Gabelaia's outrun-style synths and powerful vocals -which can go from dreamy, raspy falsettos to low-pitched, down-in-the-gutter whispers- and Rodney Perez's unbridled guitar riffs and moody synths and effects.
The Future
Looking to deliver its first record in 2017, Code Canary joined forces with up-and-coming producer Jan Kerscher to record their debut album. It will expand on its predecessor 'Wolves' by mixing their characteristic dark pop tunes with dancier, more seductive melodies and will be followed by the band's first album tour.
